Cleaning & Polishing

Teeth cleaning and polishing are essential components of good oral hygiene and dental care. They are typically performed by a dentist or dental hygienist during a routine dental checkup and can help maintain the health of your teeth and gums while also improving the appearance of your smile.

It is generally recommended to have a dental cleaning and checkup every six months.

Dental Cleaning (Scaling): This is the initial step in the process. The dental hygienist or dentist uses specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the surfaces of your teeth, especially in hard-to-reach areas. This process is called scaling. Removing plaque and tartar is crucial because they can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated.

Polishing: After scaling, your teeth are polished using a gritty toothpaste-like substance and a rotating brush or rubber cup. This polishing helps remove surface stains and makes your teeth look cleaner and shinier. It also smooth the tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque to adhere to them.

Benefits of teeth cleaning and polishing:

Prevention of Tooth Decay: Removing plaque and tartar helps prevent tooth decay by eliminating the bacteria that can erode tooth enamel.

Gum Disease Prevention: Regular cleaning can prevent or manage gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis by reducing the bacterial load on your gums.

Fresh Breath: Removing plaque and bacteria can help improve bad breath (halitosis).

Improved Appearance: Polishing gives your teeth a smoother and brighter appearance, which can boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Early Problem Detection: Routine dental visits allow your dentist to identify early signs of dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer.
